The Best of the Best SONNN!

In my opinion, I feel like my rhetorical analysis/digital essay is the best piece of writing that I have written in the entire semester. I am very proud of myself for writing about such an emotional topic that is dear to my heart- injustices of Sikhs in India. I was very stressed out in the beginning because there was so much information to put in the essay itself; the song that I chose to analyze was in a different language. I used a lot of my own personal knowledge about the crimes and atrocities committed upon Sikhs in the essay for the historical content. I also learned a lot more about my Sikh background while researching the meanings behind the song. In AP English 3, I struggled with writing papers along the lines of a rhetorical analysis and those particular essays would often turn out to be my lowest grades in the class. Surprisingly, my rhetorical analysis essay in this class ended up being the highest grade out of my major assignments. I loved being able to write about something that I genuinely cared about.
The reason I chose blog post 4 is because it relates to my style of writing. I enjoy writing about injustices being taken place in different societies, minority groups, or oppression among people in general. I felt that Islamophobia was a huge problem after 9/11 and is still a trending issue today. I enjoyed researching about this issue and I learned a lot of things about hate-crimes and discrimination against Muslims that I did not know before. I am an advocator for human and equal rights and I enjoy writing about these types of topics. I knew that Islamophobia was an issue because I, too, was also a victim of bullying, name-calling, and discrimination for having an appearance of a terrorist. Writing about Islamophobia through blogs was very fun because we were able to use different features to present the information we found. Being able to write about these types of issues encourages me to research and find more people and places where discrimination is taking place, which just adds to and encourages me to continue my style of writing.
I feel that the Nacirema piece is a bit, but not entirely, different from my typical writing style and that is why I decided to use it as one of my showcase pieces. I wanted to show that I can write about other types of topics and not just those about oppression. In this piece I talked about money being part of the Nacirema society by referring to it as “yenoM.” In the piece, I explained all the different aspects of money and its role in the Nacirema society. The piece wasn’t entirely different from my typical writing style because I did talk about how some people such as celebrities earn more money than teachers who are actually teaching students and preparing them for the future instead of just for entertainment purposes. This is showing a bit of my style when it comes to writing about unfairness and injustice. I really enjoyed writing this piece because it let us look at Nacirema, or America, in a different perspective like how we view other cultures.
